How to play Chimp Test

  1. Numbers appear scattered across the grid, then hide themselves after a moment.
  2. Tap the squares in ascending numerical order, starting at one.
  3. Clear a round and the next one adds another number.
  4. You get three strikes. Tapping out of order costs one.

Tips & strategy

  • Do not read the numbers one at a time. Take in the whole grid as a shape and remember the path between them.
  • Say the positions to yourself as a route โ€” top left, middle, bottom right โ€” rather than as digits.
  • The first four are usually easy. Spend your attention on where the highest numbers landed.
  • Chimpanzees routinely reach nine or ten. Most adults stall around seven, so anything above that is genuinely good.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this test come from?

It is modelled on working-memory experiments run at Kyoto University, where young chimpanzees outperformed human adults at exactly this task.

How long are the numbers visible?

They stay visible until you tap the first square, so you can take as long as you like to memorise the layout before committing.

What is a good score?

Reaching level nine puts you well above the typical adult result. Level twelve and beyond is exceptional.
